Wardens fight reaches No.10

Wednesday 27th May 2009

Sheltered housing tenants from across London gathered in force at Downing Street on 18 May, urging the government to protect their resident wardens.

Around 30 placard-waving tenants and their supporters, from sheltered housing schemes in Barnet, Hammersmith and Hackney, delivered a petition of 350 signatures to Number 10.

The event was organised by David Young, chair of the Kingsley Court strategy committee in Barnet. Councillors in the borough will decide next month whether to back unpopular proposals to axe resident wardens.

Barnet residents continued the protest outside the council’s town hall the following evening.

Vernon Yarker, chair of lobby group Sheltered Housing UK, who travelled from Essex to support the Downing Street event, said he hoped it would be the ‘first of many’.
