Fed calls for £3bn efficiency scheme
Tuesday 31st March 2009The chief executive of the National Housing Federation has written to the chancellor calling for £3 billion to improve the energy efficiency of social housing.
David Orr has written to Alistair Darling suggesting the retrofit programme ahead of the Budget on 22 April.
The federation is calling for a pilot programme with an initial investment of £3 billion covering 2009/10 and 2011/12. It suggests the scheme is run on a competitive basis, by the Homes and Communities Agency.
It argues that such a scheme would cut emissions and fuel bills, and create jobs.
In the letter Mr Orr writes: ‘We share your vision of achieving an 80 per cent reduction of UK greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
‘A programme of works to improve our existing homes must play a critical role in ensuring that climate change targets are met.’
